How do I set up my Onyx (Soracom Onyx LTE) 4G dongle?

Some SIMs are OTA-ready (e.g., T-Mobile) and work with the Onyx dongle with no extra setup. Others (e.g., US Cellular) need APN configuration by HarvestEye via a remote session.

1) Insert your SIM card into the Onyx dongle

  1. Slide the rear cover open to access the SIM slot.

  2. Place your nano-SIM into the tray.

  3. Carefully slide the tray back into the dongle until it clicks into place.

  4. Plug the dongle into one of the USB-A ports on the HarvestEye USB-C hub enclosure inside the cab.

Once connected and powered, the dongle will automatically search for a network.

2) Check whether your SIM needs configuration

OTA-ready carrier (e.g., T-Mobile):

  • If the carrier supports OTA (Over-The-Air) provisioning, the APN is pushed automatically and 4G should work without extra steps.

Not OTA (e.g., US Cellular):

  • Automatic APN push won’t occur. The SIM won’t work until the APN is configured on the dongle.

How to check quickly:

  • Option A: Search “[your carrier] APN” online to see if they are OTA-ready.

  • Option B (simplest): Insert the SIM and connect the dongle.

    • If 4G works → no action needed.

    • If 4G does not work → APN configuration is required.

3) If APN configuration is required

HarvestEye will configure the Onyx dongle remotely.

What we need from you:

  1. Your carrier’s APN details

    • Search online (e.g., “EE APN”, “US Cellular APN”) and copy the APN name and any required fields (username/password if applicable).

    • Email them to support@harvesteye.com.

  2. Prepare your system for the remote session

    • Tablet connected to power.

    • USB-C hub connected and Soracom Onyx dongle inserted.

    • Tablet connected to Wi-Fi (so we can remote in even though 4G isn’t working yet).

  3. Let us know when you’re ready

    • Email support@harvesteye.com to confirm the tablet is prepared.

    • If possible, pre-agree a time for the remote session (helps with time-zones).

Once connected, we’ll apply the APN settings to your Onyx dongle and verify the 4G status on your tablet.

4) Quick troubleshooting after configuration

  • No internet after config: Restart the tablet (press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to fully power down, then turn on again).

  • Intermittent signal: Move the machine to improve LTE signal, then retry.

  • APN rejected: Re-check the APN string and credentials with your carrier and resend to Support.

  • Further Advanced troubleshooting and information can be found here.
