Challenge

The team needed a faster, more reliable way to capture high-quality harvest and grading data. Manual processes were slow, labour-intensive, and limited in detail, making it hard to gain deeper crop insights and causing bottlenecks during peak grading periods.

Results

HarvestEye has improved grading efficiency and data quality, shifting the team from manual, time-consuming analysis to a streamlined, data-rich workflow. The system delivers precise measurements and real-time visibility into tuber size distribution and variability, supporting stronger decisions and reducing grading bottlenecks. Early outcomes are highly promising, and the team is excited about the future potential of the technology.

About the agriculture department

New Brunswick’s agriculture and food & beverage manufacturing sectors are a key part of the provincial economy. The sectors employ over 11,500 New Brunswickers and the value of food and beverage shipments exceed $1 billion.

Crop production generates half of the farm cash receipts for agriculture in the province. The crops sector is extremely diverse, involving the production of over twenty different types of agricultural commodities.

Potatoes are the main crop grown in the province.  New Brunswick produces over 20,000 hectares of potatoes with 56% of the crop destined for processing, 25% to fresh market and 19% for seed.

The Challenge

They needed a more efficient and reliable way to capture high-quality data during harvest and grading. Their existing workflow relied heavily on manual processes, which were time-consuming, labour-intensive, and limited in the level of detail they could collect. This made it difficult to gain deeper insights into crop performance, particularly real-time visibility into tuber size distribution and variability, ultimately slowing decision-making and creating bottlenecks during peak grading periods.

The Solution

Over the past year, the research team embraced emerging AgTech tools to modernise their workflow. Central to this shift was the adoption of the HarvestEye system, an innovative technology designed to automate and enrich data capture during harvest and grading.

With a collaborative, open-minded team willing to explore new approaches, HarvestEye was successfully integrated into variety evaluation operations. The system enabled real-time, high-resolution data collection streamlining grading activities while unlocking deeper insights into crop performance that were previously difficult or impossible to capture.

The Results

The HarvestEye system has significantly enhanced the team’s grading efficiency and data quality, enabling them to capture deeper insights faster than ever before. Processes that once required extensive manual effort and time-consuming post-harvest analysis have now shifted to a streamlined, data-rich workflow. The system not only improves the precision of measurements but also provides real-time visibility into tuber size distribution and variability—insights that greatly elevate the value of their variety evaluations.

By integrating this technology into their grading operations, the research team is now able to make more informed decisions, reduce bottlenecks during peak grading periods, and strengthen the overall reliability of their agronomic conclusions. The early results have been highly promising, and the team is enthusiastic about the future. They are eager to see how the HarvestEye system will continue to evolve, what new capabilities it may introduce, and how it will further transform their approach to field research and crop performance assessment.
