Adrian Scripps Ltd., a prominent apple grower in South East England, faced the challenge of needing accurate size profiles and yield maps of their orchards during harvesting. This information was essential for adjusting marketing programs and addressing any issues related to fruit size, thereby ensuring they met retailer demands. With 300 hectares of topfruit spread across three sites and a rotating replanting program, the need for precise data was critical for their long-term orchard management.
The Solution
James Simpson, Managing Director of Adrian Scripps Ltd., approached HarvestEye to explore whether their technology, originally designed for potatoes, could be adapted for apples. 'We were looking for an opportunity to get a size profile and a yield map of our orchards as we were harvesting,' said Simpson. HarvestEye proved to be very open and responsive, adapting their system to fit Adrian Scripps' self-propelled rigs. The integration process was straightforward, described by Simpson as 'plug and play'. The system, consisting of a camera placed above a conveyor, measures every individual apple, providing accurate data in real-time. 'The team are very approachable with a very adaptable technology and software which we believe is delivering what we’re looking for,' noted Simpson.
The Results
By implementing HarvestEye, Adrian Scripps Ltd. has successfully obtained precise size profiles, fruit counts, and yield maps for their orchards. This valuable data has allowed them to make informed decisions about their marketing programs, tailoring their products to meet retailer demands more effectively. Moreover, the yield mapping has enabled them to identify underperforming sections of their orchards, facilitating better long-term orchard management. 'HarvestEye has been really easy to integrate. A tablet plugged to the machine every day, links to the camera and that’s it,' said Simpson. With plans to integrate the system into 50% of their harvesters, Adrian Scripps is poised for significant improvements in efficiency and profitability.
